Monsoon trek in Nepal- Rain shadow areas of Nepal

Rainshadow-

"A part of land deprived from rainfall because of topographic barriers, especially a mountain range that blocks moist winds from ocean currents, causing the leeward side to experience very little precipitation"

Likewise, Nepal has few places which receive lesser rainfall year-round, making it ideal for monsoon trekking in Nepal. These areas are warm and dry and are accessible for trekking throughout the year. Mustang, Tsum Valley and Dolpo are major rain shadow areas of Nepal. Upper Mustang and Dopo are restricted regions, which require you to gain a special permit to enter.

Monsoon Treks in Nepal - Rain Shadow Areas of Nepal

Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang During Monsoon

Also known as "Land Beyond Himalayas", Mustang is a high-altitude region located in western Nepal bordering the Tibet in the North. The word 'Mustang' locally means "Place where medicinal herbs are found". The long forbidden kingdom of Lo is a land of spectacular Tibetan monasteries, canyons, and cave complexes. A rain shadow area, Mustang receives the least rainfall; as such, a desert-like landscape is accessible for trekking throughout the year. But the exquisite greenery setting during the monsoon season is the best scene you can only capture year-round.

Upper Dolpo Trek

Shey Phoksundo Lake ( Deepest Lake in Nepal)

Culturally Tibetan, Dolpo falls under the upper part of the Dolpa District of western Nepal. It is one of the rain shadow areas where tourists can do Upper Dolpo Trek throughout the year. Dolpa was also the location for the 1999 Oscar-nominated film Himalaya: Caravan. Generally, Dolpo residents are followers of Bon, a religion whose roots predate Buddhism. The custom of sky burial for the dead is still prevalent among the residents.

Some highlights of this trek are the Snow leopard, distinctive landscape, unique culture, and serene view of Shey Phoksundo Lake which rests at  3,611.5 m (11,849 ft).

Nar Phu Valley Trek

Nar Phu is a true hidden gem that features unspoiled valleys, raw Himalayan nature and age-old Buddhist Culture. A week of extra add-on to the more visited- Annapurna Circuit Trek takes you to the remote classic village of Nar and Phu near the Tibetan border.

Phu People during Nor Phu Trekking

Amongst the restricted regions of Nepal, the government provided access to trekking in this region only since 2002.

Tsum Valley Trek

Tsum Valley is a sacred hidden valley located in one of the most sheltered places of Nepal. This peaceful himalayan valley have been bypassed by mainstream development for centuries due to its remoteness and inaccessiblity. As a result, the nature and unique culture has also remained fairly untouched. Legend holds that the great saint Milarepa had meditated in the caves of this valley in the 11th century. The trails is strewn with artistic stupas that are lined with mani walls craved with prayers and drawings of deities. The Tsum Valley Trek offers you opportunity to explore the rich ancient art, culture, and religion along backdrop view of Boudha Himal,  Sringi Himal, Himal Chuli, and Ganesh Himal.

Muktinath holiday Trek

Muktinath Temple

Muktinath is an exotic pilgrimage site for Hindus and  Buddhist, and a great example of harmony between two religions. Thousands of devotees from Nepal, India, and Tibet come here every year for soul purification and salvation. Legend also holds that throughout history many Asian kings did the same. Not only for pilgrims, it also makes up for a great destination for trekkers. It’s well worth spending your holiday here which is accessible throughout the year undisturbed by the monsoon season.
